QUESTION:
I have a 12x40 1977 Skipperliner. What type and capacity bilge pump or pumps do you suggest?
ANSWER: Marine Bilge Pumps
Michael,
Thanks for writing to us. I believe that if a little is good more's better especially in the bilge dept. I suggest using a Mayfair Proline 750GPH. Dont forget to install a new float starter along with it. You can pick this up at Wholesale Marine online. They are approx $30.00 and a float switch is approx $13.00. Most larger boats have the hull in sections so be sure to have a new pump in each compartment. An example of this is. Bow compartment, Living quarters dept, and Engine compartment. Most of the time these are sealed and separate from each other for obvious reasons. If your hull is steel or aluminum do not simply attach your ground wire to the hull anywhere. Run good shielded wire back to your manual switch and then to the battery postive and negitive. Failure to wire in this manner can cause corrision issues. (article on anodes) Remember to check the function of the bildge pumps monthly by raising the float and using the manual switch. Side note here is just because you hear it running doesnt mean it can remove water. There could be other issues as simple as a dirt dobber nest in the water exhaust port in the hull of the boat. Always pour water in the compartment to be certain it functions properly and discards the water overboard. I hope this helps you out.
