Check List for Taking Houseboat Out
I was asked by Joel on our dock if I could write a list of things to do before leaving the Marina.
Fill the water holding tanks
Shut off Dock power at dock supply
Disconnect Shore power lines and stow.
Switch over shore to Generator control switches
Start generator
Check and make sure Generator is circulating water (water discharge side of boat)
Turn engine compartment blower on let run a few minutes
Start engines
Check all gauges for proper function. Engines warming up during rest of check off.
Shut off water to holding tanks when full
Shut off dock water supply
Disconnect water supply to boat and stow
Make certain your horn works
Make sure your radio is on and tuned to your marina channel
Take a good look at flags on boats in marina for wind strength and direction
Disconnect tie down ropes from boat to dock
Make certain everyone is on board and safe
With a spotter at the stern back out slowly. (Hand held radios work great)
Exit marina slowly and expect the unexpected.
You're in a large boat. For some reason smaller ones don't see you.
If something happens don't over react. Remember slow is your friend.
Remember to watch flags; wind direction can change from one part of the marina to another due to being blocked by other boats and structures. Be proactive to this not reactive.
Have a great outing
Uncle Ricky
